少し前、日本にいる近しい友人から連絡を貰った。彼女とは幼児期から、もう35年以上の付き合いで、日本に里帰りする時には必ず訪問すべき大切な友人の一人である。彼女は20代に入ってすぐに結婚・出産したため、長男はすでに成人していたりするのだが、今回は、10代後半に差し掛かり、人生初の岐路に立っているらしい次男くんについての相談だった。

「(次男が）海外に行って英語勉強して何かやりたいって思ってるらしいんだけど、何やりたいかってのはわからないみたい。」

私は彼女に訊ねた。

「（次男くんは）英語の勉強してるの？」

「全然してない。」と、彼女。そしてこう続けた。

「大学には行かないって言ってるけど、すぐ働くのもいやだって言ってて。1年そこそこ違う国に行ってみるっていうのも彼の為になるかもしれないんじゃないかな？って。」

私にも母親の気持ちとはどんなものかはよく理解できる。彼女のことも友人としてよく知っている。とはいえ、もし当の次男くんがその時私と友人のチャットに参加していたら、きっと少し厳しい言葉をかけていただろう。

「まず第一に、海外に行きたいと考えているんだったら、母親が心配して情報集めを始めてしまうなんて事はさせず、全て自分で調べて情報を集めなさい！そして、せめて自分が行きたいと考えている国の言語の勉強くらいはしなさい。第二に、まずはすぐに仕事を見つけて留学資金は全部自分で貯めなさい。自分が生活している社会にさえ貢献できずして、世界を語るなんてもってのほか！」

若いうちに大きな望みを持って世界を見て回るというのはとても素晴らしい事である。個人的には全ての若い男女に海外へ出てみることをお勧めしたい。それがたとえただの海外旅行でも、留学でも海外赴任でもなんでも構わない。それはきっと彼らが彼ら自身のアイデンティティーを見つめなおす、つまり、自分という人間が実際どういう人物なのかについて見つめなおす素晴らしい機会になるだろう。海外では今まで見たこともない物や経験したことのないことに出くわすだろうし、世界各国から多様な言語、文化、観念を持った様々な人たちに会うことだろう。そしてそんな人たちとどうコミュニケーションを取ればいいのか、どのように彼らと自分の違いを受け入れ、自分と全く違う人たちとどのようにきちんと接することができるのかについて学ぶだろう。というように、若いうちに海外に出ていくべき理由は山ほどあるのだ。そしてそうして初めて彼らはいわゆる「グローバルな人間」に近づけるのだ。

それなりに経験したことのある人間として、海外を目指す人たちにいくつか提案しておきたいのだが、本当に真剣に海外に行こうとお考えであるならば、「情報収集」でさえも有効語学学習の時間であるとみなすべきである。

海外留学に行こうと考える人の中には、賢く留学エージェントやそれに類似したサービスを利用して、面倒で時間や労力を要する手続きは全て彼らにお任せしてしまおうと考える方もいるようだが、私に言わせれば、それは単に時間とお金の無駄である。エージェントさんを利用すべきは、海外赴任が決まったが、渡航のための手続きに割く時間が取れないビジネスマンや、パッケージツアーなどを利用して短期海外旅行を楽しもうという方であるべきであって、さあ、これから海外に乗り込んでちょっくら自分とやらを試してみようじゃないかと考えているあなたが利用すべきサービスではない。例えば渡航先の国が英語圏で、現地の英語学校を探しているのであれば、今すぐインターネットで学校のリストを探してみるといい。学校のホームページの情報を英語で全て読んで、きちんと自分で内容を理解できているだろうか。もしそこで自分の英語力と理解力の無さにほとほと呆れたのであれば、それは何よりいい傾向だ。なぜならば、そんなあなたが一度現地に渡航したら、想像以上に自分の無力さを突き付けられ、カルチャーショックを経験し、まるで金づちで頭を強く打たれるかのような衝撃と劣等感にさいなまれる日々に向き合うことになるからだ。

取り合えず内容が理解できるのであれば、まずは学校の問い合わせ窓口にEメールしてみるといい。通常現地にあるプライベート企業経営の英語学校であれば、大抵あなたの母国語を理解できるネイティブの担当者、いわゆるあなたにとっては心強い先輩的存在となる方が受け答えしてくれるだろう。そういう学校を選ぶのであれば、それはそれで構わない。しかし、例えばそういったサービスを受けられる可能性は低くとも、プライベートな学校に比べて授業料が少々良心的な、現地公立の高等教育機関に付属している英語学校を敢えて選ぶというのなら、そこからの壁は既に全て自力で突破していくものとなり、あなたに自信と英語力の向上のチャンスを与えてくれる経験の一つとなるだろう。

これだけインターネットが普及し、世界中のあらゆる情報が誰にでも簡単に手に入る大変便利な世の中になった今、私たちには言い訳をする余裕はなくなった。「忙しいから。」「わからないから」この情報溢れる社会において、もはやそんな言葉は通用しないのである。

幾らグローバル社会、海外志向、早期英語教育などという言葉や教育思想が飛び交う世の中になろうとも、一番大切なのは自分自身のマインドセットであり、行動するか否かなのである。

人は誰でも、住む環境に関係なく、どこに居ようともベストを尽くせる。

これから海外を目指す若者たちにとって、パスポートよりも先に取得すべき心意気はそれに尽きるのではないだろうか。

 

Little while ago I have received a message from my very close friend in Japan. We’ve known each other for more than 35 years and  she is one of the most important people to visit every time I go back to Japan. She’s got married in her early 20s and her oldest son is already independent. But this time she wanted to ask me about her middle son who is standing at the first crossroad of his life.

“He says that he wants to go abroad to study English and wants to do something but he doesn’t have any clear idea of what he wants to do yet.”

I asked her

“Has he been studying English?”

She replied “Not at all. He hasn’t even started.” and continued,

“He is not interested in going to a university here but doesn’t want to work yet.  I wonder if having a break for a year or so in the different country would be a benefit of him?”

 

I understand the feeling of being a mother. I know my friend very well.  However, If her son were on the chat board with us, I would have given him a bit harsh words.

“First of all, If you are thinking about going to another country, gather information by yourself (don’t let your mother do for you!) and at least study the language that is spoken in the country if you are really thinking about it.  Secondary, Get a job and save up money all by yourself first. Try to contribute wherever you are as a part of your own society then, Start thinking about the world.”

 

It is a wonderful thing for young people to have an aspiration to see the world. Personally, I exhort every young man & woman to go abroad.  It doesn’t matter if they were just travelling for a week, studying for a year or got a long-term position overseas for your work.  I’m sure it would be a great opportunity for them to reflect on their identity which means the opportunity to think about who actually you are. They will come across with things they have never seen or experience new things that they have never done before and they will meet all sorts of people with diverse language, cultures and perspectives. They would be able to learn how to communicate with those people,  how to accept the differences and cope with them appropriately.  Just like this, there are tons of good reasons for it and this is how they turn into someone who can see things from the point of global view.

Here I am,  as a fairly experienced person, I’d tell a few things to those who are aiming toward overseas.  If you are seriously thinking about going abroad, you should regard even “information gathering process” as an effective time for your language study.

I often see people who are keen on using a study abroad agency or some similar services and leave all time-consuming jobs to them.  It may be a cleaver way but to me, it seems to be just wasting the great learning opportunity, time and money.  If English is spoken in your chosen country and you are looking for some English school, just jump on the internet and find the school lists. Read the school information on their homepage in the original language and try to understand all by yourself.  If you felt that you are hopeless that’s good sign because you WILL feel worse than that once you arrived the country!  You may feel like as if you’ve got hit your head with a hammer each time you come across with a big culture shock and you experience great stress because of the language barrier that prevents you from expressing your thoughts and feelings.

Email the school you are interested in and ask them your questions. Usually most of private schools have someone who can correspond you in your language then, it would be good on you. But if you are looking for some public institution (which are usually providing cheaper options)  you may need to use English throughout the process and that definitely will be a great opportunity for you to improve your English!

Due to the expansion of the Internet, all information about the world became available to everyone and now we are not allowed to make any excuses such as “I’m too busy to learn” or “It’s too hard to understand.”  We can no longer give ourselves any good explanations for the reasons of how come we put our challenges aside. It doesn’t matter how deeply our society believes that people who can see things from their global point of view can be successful or no matter how your parents tell you about the importance of learning English in your early years, that’s not a point.  The most important thing is how you set your own mind and whether you really do it or not.

Living environment can’t limit your possibility.  You can try your best wherever you are.

Perhaps, getting the kind of spirit first is more important than getting a passport for those who are hoping to go abroad in their near future.
